Welcome. I am Chasity Phelps, the intuitive reader, artist, and creator behind Bluegrass Mystic Company, operating from the heart of Bowling Green, KY.
My Personal Journey & The Origin of My Practice
Growing up as an 80s baby caught between Gen X and the Millennials, I spent my early years running around outside and creating imaginary worlds with my cousins. Outside of that tight knit family circle, however, I was highly bullied and often isolated. I was raised by a single mother who worked two or three jobs just to keep a stable foundation for us, and even then, we relied heavily on the support of our extended family to survive.
My childhood was also marked by intense experiences with low-vibrational energy, which some might call demonic attacks. I had terrifying, recurring dreams about dark entities that were so vivid I could still paint them today. I woke up in the middle of the night constantly, which was hard on my mom since we shared a bed. These experiences finally stopped when I became a Christian at the age of fourteen. While I no longer consider myself a Christian in the traditional sense, Jesus remains a vital guide in my spiritual practice and helped me survive some incredibly dark days as a teenager.
On a physical level, I almost lost my life several times to severe asthma attacks. In one instance, a Kentucky State Trooper pulled my mom over for speeding, only to end up escorting us straight to the nearest hospital in Frankfort. In another, I suffered an attack during a fifth grade class and panicked at the thought of an ambulance, forcing my teacher to call my mom to rush me to the ER.
At the age of twenty one, during the first of many senior years of college, I experienced a loss that shattered my world. My mentor and friend, Dr. Stephen Tilford, passed away from colon cancer at just forty years old. He was a significant father figure to me and to many others. I blamed God and the universe for taking him for many years. For almost fifteen years, I floated through life in a haze of bitter rage and grief.
During that time, I navigated several career paths across healthcare, corrections, and food manufacturing. It was during my time in food manufacturing that I finally hit a breaking point and realized I needed the help of therapy. I saw two distinct paths in front of me: one where I ended my life, and one where I changed it. I chose the harder path. Therapy helped validate my experience with dating abuse, and helped me slow down the vicious cycle of codependency. It also helped me heal by properly diagnosing me with AuDHD. Where before I continually berated myself for not being able to do things like others, that diagnosis finally helped me with self acceptance. I realized I didn't do things like others because I simply wasn't like others. Finally, in 2024, after a series of multiple job losses, I surrendered and asked my spirit guides for intervention. I said, "Help me understand what I am supposed to do, because what I am doing is clearly not working."
And they answered.
Soon after that plea, I met a local group of people with diverse spiritual beliefs. I had not practiced anything seriously spiritual in almost eighteen years, but my life shifted positively the moment I found this community. We began meeting weekly to practice our intuition, explore mediumship, and experiment with energy healing. After two years of dedicated practice with this group and alone with my guides, I am a completely transformed person. In many ways, I feel I have lived multiple different lives. Those raw, varied experiences are exactly what give me the unique perspectives I bring to my readings today.
Now, my path walks the line between the seen and the unseen. My Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Biology, with an emphasis on infectious diseases, grounds my metaphysical work in a profound respect for the natural, physical world and the complex, microscopic ecosystems we interact with daily. Whether I am tending my growing indoor or outdoor jungle, creating custom tarot and oracle cards, or otherwise getting my hands into a DIY project, I find magic in the tangible. I am also a writer. Under the name C.F. Phelps, I explore poetry and have won several short film awards for my screenplays.
As a Pisces Ascendant, I have always been highly attuned to the fluid currents of the universe. My spiritual practice is eclectic, intentional, and entirely transparent. My core intent is to operate within the highest light of Christ consciousness, infused with a touch of Christian Gnosticism that honors the direct, personal connection to the divine spark within us all. I also respectfully work alongside a diverse range of energies, deities, and guides, including:
Ma Kali
Lord Ganesha
Hekate
Persephone
The Egyptian pantheon
Archangel Michael
Archangel Metatron
Various other angelic realms
When diving into cosmic blueprints, I utilize the Placidus house system for astrological precision, and I frequently incorporate the grounding properties of crystals and herbs into my daily rituals and readings. To bring this energy into the physical world for my clients, I utilize tarot and oracle cards, as well as energy healing. I also practice mediumship and channel messages directly. However, I want to be entirely transparent that with mediumship, I am just now starting to understand what abilities I have. I still have quite a bit to learn about both mediumship and astrology, but I consider them lifelong studies. There is only so much a person can learn in one lifetime!
A psychopomp is similar to a "Death Doula." However, while a doula provides emotional and physical support to the dying and their families in the physical world, a psychopomp acts as a conductor of souls. My role is to act as a guide and a bridge for those transitioning from this life to the next. This often occurs in the realms of higher consciousness even if I am not physically aware.
Although I had lost several people within my family and friends to death already, working in an ER was what helped me to realize that I had some kind of gift. I just didn’t know what it was called, and I couldn’t talk about it without sounding completely insane.
During the four years I worked in a local ER, I almost always knew when someone was going to pass. In those cases where the ER staff was able to revive the person, I think it was only because the patient chose to come back. Even though my job was patient registration and collecting the billing info, I often found myself comforting the families where I was able. In some cases, those people needed my strength while they watched their family members have CPR performed on them unsuccessfully.
Some deaths haunt me as well. There were several people that I went in to register, and I was the last person to see them alive. They begged for help, but all I could do was to tell the staff. Within thirty minutes of me seeing them, those people died. I remember the fear and the desperation on their faces. They did not want to go but did not have a choice when it was all said and done. I remember some murder victims and assaults. I still remember the faces of the children that passed away as well. On those days, there were not many dry eyes in the ER.
For years, I compartmentalized those experiences until I began therapy. I remember comforting various people as they passed away, and in one case, I stayed at the bedside of a childhood friend until the coroner picked him up because his parents could not bear to stay after the loss of their third and final child.
The whole reason I am talking about those experiences is because my awareness of being a psychopomp grew as I continued through my therapeutic and spiritual journey.
The first psychopomp to appear to me was Persephone, closely followed by Hekate. Both are of Greek legend and appeared to me in dreams. From there, Ma Kali of the Hindu tradition chose to work with me, and she has been one of my main guides for the last two years. Finally, about one year ago, Charon (the ferryman of the river Styx in the underworld of Hades' domain) appeared to me in a dream and then again in a meditative vision. When Charon appeared to work with me, that is when I knew for sure that I was a psychopomp.
This was then confirmed by my guides when they gave me another meditative vision on how psychopomps are created. My guides shared that human psychopomps are created when they have touched death and come back from the other side. As I shared before, I almost died several times as a child from asthma attacks. So, this made logical sense to me.
The final confirmation came when I was asked to help a family friend during her final battle with cancer. I was given the gift of being able to help her and her family, to support them during the last days in making life’s hardest decisions. I recognize what an incredible honor it was to be able to do that for her and her family.
I believe that spiritual work cannot exist in a vacuum, and my practice is informed by my commitment to human rights, personal sovereignty, and systemic justice. This is especially true given my Libra Sun and Sagittarius Moon. This can sometimes cause strife, in that my ideal version of justice doesn’t always match the physical reality of justice. I have also had to learn that spiritual justice and physical justice are two very different things. While physical justice may look like: someone commits a crime and then goes to jail; spiritual justice may look like: someone commits the crime of theft. You never find out who it is, but suddenly you win the lottery and it replaces what you lost from the theft.
My perspective on equality is rooted in my lived experiences. Having spent a decade working in healthcare, followed by time working within Corrections and the court system, I have seen firsthand how our justice system routinely favors the wealthy and disparately punishes the poor. I am committed to systemic reform. True justice means that all people convicted of the same crimes must face the exact same treatment and punishment, regardless of:
Social status
Financial ability
Race or color
Sex, gender, or sexual orientation
Disability or any other vulnerable grouping
I demand a system where officials are held fully accountable for their actions, whether they are making reckless choices like drunk driving, or abusing their positions of power for personal and social gain. This demand for fairness extends directly into the workplace. I am an absolute supporter of employee rights, fair wages, and corporate accountability. While I appreciate the historical foundation unions have built for worker protections, I believe true advocacy must go further. We need a broader influence on labor laws and systemic enhancements to protect workers universally, not just conditionally.
Drawing from this extensive experience working with the public, I view robust social programs not as "socialism" but as the fundamental infrastructure of a healthy society. Ensuring everyone has their basic needs met allows our most vulnerable to become stronger contributors to our collective whole. I have witnessed the devastating, karmic cycle created by a lack of mental healthcare and systemic ignorance among the health, law enforcement, and legal communities. Untreated conditions lead to self-medication through illegal drug use, creating a revolving door of hospital stays and incarcerations, culminating in homelessness and unnecessary death. Furthermore, we must address the root causes and barriers to wellness. This includes acknowledging how the very food we eat contributes to worsening physical and mental health hellscapes, and dismantling the exorbitant fee structures and income barriers that gatekeep life-saving medicines and insurance.
My views on public safety and personal liberties reflect this same desire for systemic responsibility. I am a supporter of the Second Amendment within reason. However, I do not believe civilians need access to weapons like AK-47s or AR-15s unless they are engaged in military action or hold a special permit. In my view, purchasing and owning these types of firearms should require the exact same rigorous licensing and permitting processes as possessing explosives.
Just as I believe in systemic equity, I advocate for personal sovereignty. I am fiercely pro-choice and support complete bodily autonomy. I support the pursuit of universal healthcare, recognizing the nuances in how such systems must be responsibly built. Equally foundational to my practice is my absolute, unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community, including marriage equality and transgender healthcare. Bluegrass Mystic Company is, and always will be, a fiercely safe and affirming space for all identities.
My connection to the physical world is also rooted in a blend of shamanic-type cultures, Japanese philosophies, and Hinduism. I believe it is our sacred duty to act as caretakers of Gaia, Mother Earth. We must strive to give back as much as we take, fiercely preserving natural ecosystems. I believe in the ethical and humane treatment of all living beings. Because of this, I do not support killing animals for pure sport, holding an immense respect for the "eat what you kill" philosophy. On a systemic level, I am passionate about conservation and would love to see the United States commit to the rigorous, uncompromising level of recycling that Japan practices, ensuring our materials are truly repurposed rather than shipped to overseas landfills. As it stands, I would like to find ways to increase my own recycling while also meeting the needs of my autism. This means I will continue to use paper plates and similar products, but will seek ways to recycle these products even if within my own home or future artworks.
